Zane Hodge Obituary

Dr. Zane Douglas Hodge, 67, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, in Greenwood.  Funeral services are 10 A.M. Saturday, September 2 at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Pelley officiating.  Interment is in the Roberts Family Cemetery in Carroll County. Visitation is Friday, September 1, from 5pm to 7pm.

Zane was born to Roger and Jo Ann Quinton Hodge on June 2, 1956, in Greenwood.  He graduated from Greenwood High School and attended Mississippi Delta Community College, Delta State University, Wesley Biblical Seminary, and received his Doctor of Divinity from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Cordova, TN.  He was an English instructor at MS Delta Community College since 2004, had been the Pastor for Moorhead Church of God for 23 years, and was Pastor of Centerville Baptist Church for the past five years. He adored Penny, his wife of 46 years, and his beloved cats. He was a proud father and grandfather, who cherished each and every moment he spent with his family.

Dr. Hodge was the favorite teacher of many of his students at MDCC (mostly because he could be swayed for extra credit with a Snickers bar) and a constant source of entertainment and good-natured antics for his fellow instructors.

Zane had a passion for fundraising for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.  He was an avid endurance athlete who, since 2012, pushed himself to the limit in an annual swim at Lake Chicot to raise awareness for diabetes, famously swimming 21 miles in a single day

He is survived by his wife Penny Hodge; a son, Forrest Hodge (Paul Brown) of Greenwood; a daughter, Andrea Turner (Billy Paul) of Boyle; two sisters, Helen Wofford (David) of Gainesville, FL, and Carol Terrell (Ronald) of Ruleville; a brother, Quinton Hodge (Rebecca) of Laurel; and 3 grandchildren, Caitlin Turner of Boyle, Zane Austin Turner of Boyle, and Brendan Pernell of Greenwood.

Pallbearers are Gerald Johnson, Charlie Turner, Tyler Kirk, Bryan Waldrop, Paul Barrentine, and Shay Darby. Honorary pallbearers are Junior Barrentine, Lynn Watts, Steve Webb, and Danny Collins. Memorials may be made to: Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, 800 Avery Boulevard North Suite 100, Ridgeland, MS  39157 msdiabetes.org.
