Thomas “Tommy” Joseph Muirhead, 85, of Greenwood, Mississippi, passed away on March 29, 2021 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, April 5, 2021 at the Episcopal Church of Nativity, with a private interment following in Provine Cemetery, Money, Mississippi. Visitation will be from 1:00 until the time of service. Rev. Charlie Deaton will officiate the services.
Tommy was born on October 16, 1935 in Boyle, Mississippi to Allie Tremble and Ernest Theo Muirhead and grew up in Canton, Mississippi, where he graduated from Canton High School. After attending Hinds Jr. College and Ole Miss, where he played football, he graduated from Memphis State University.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Georgianne Muirhead, and stepdaughter, Elizabeth Howard McShan.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sally Jane Provine Muirhead; one son, Jody Muirhead (Kelli), of Greenwood, Mississippi; one stepdaughter, Debbie McShan Leib (Bill), of Perdido, Florida; sister, Jeanette Saab (George), of Canton, Mississippi; brother, Allen Theo Muirhead, of Canton, Mississippi; brother-in-law, Bob Provine (Paula), of Money, Mississippi; two granddaughters, Allie Muirhead, of Greenwood, Misssissppi and Maury Sullivan (Bryan) of Lucedale, Mississippi; and two great grandchildren, Alexis Sullivan of Lucedale, Mississippi and Anna Dixon (Warren), of Agricola, Mississippi.
Tommy moved to Greenwood in 1960, where he began his career as President of Dixie Homes, Inc. from 1962 until his retirement in 2003.
Tommy had three sayings that were heard by many, “Let the good times roll; Life is short; and You only got one life so live it well. And, that he did. Tommy enjoyed traveling, whether piloting his airplane or the second love of his life, The Delta Lady, his boat. He was an avid quail hunter traveling all over the country in search of the small bird. Later in life Tommy’s talents turned to wood working. You were a treasured friend if you were the recipient of one of his walking canes. With Tommy’s many hobbies, one he’ll long be remembered for was his story-telling. Tommy Muirhead, a life lived well indeed.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Bledsoe, Sonny Bowie, O.C. Brewer, Wayne Bush, Noel Morgan, Steve Scott, George Smith, Billy Walker and Roy Yaeger.
The family would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Henry Flautt and his staff, for their excellent care over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Delta Cross, 615 Grand Boulevard, Greenwood, Mississippi, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
