Tommy DePriest passed away on December 31, 2023. He was 79 years old.
Thomas Arlanda DePriest was born to Buple and Howard DePriest in Steele, Missouri, on May 8, 1944. His family later moved to Shelby, Mississippi where he grew up. He was a stand-out athlete at Shelby High School and was awarded an athletic scholarship to Mississippi Delta Junior College, where he played basketball. He later attended Delta State University.
Tommy served in the Mississippi National Guard and farmed with his brother before becoming an ag pilot. His career spanned more than five decades before he retired due to health issues. He was a lifetime pilot member of the MS Agricultural aviation association.
He took up team-roping in the mid 1980s. He loved riding horses and roping, although he’d tell you that he was only slightly better at roping than he was at golf. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals, old episodes of Gunsmoke, and anything starring John Wayne. He was a member of McCarley Baptist Church where he sang in the choir and enjoyed belting out the old gospel songs. Tommy enjoyed a good round of stories, the kind that are re-told at every gathering. He was a pretty good bridge player and never thought twice about jumping in his truck and driving out to see his brother in Texas, or on to Arizona, just because.
Visitation will be Wednesday, January 3 from 4:00 to 6:00 at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home, 1008 Sgt. John Pittman Dr., Greenwood, MS. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 4 at 11:30 at McCarley Baptist Church, 118 County Road 357, McCarley, MS with Bro Rupert Ingram officiating.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha Carol DePriest of Carrollton; children, Keetha (Jeffrey) Mosley of Madison and Lan (Angie) DePriest of Jackson, Tennessee; grandchildren Tillman Reed, Kamryn DePriest, and Addyson DePriest; his older sister, Imogene Priest of Blue Springs; brother, Joe Howard (Edna) DePriest of Avery, Texas; sister, Sandra Rink (Junior Dye) of Saltillo; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and grandparents and his brother-in-law, Sid Priest.
Honorary pallbearers are Jimmy Austin, Junior Estes, Jerry Fitts, Wayne McCrary, Dan Narramore, David O’Bryan, Richard Sanders, and Joe Worthy.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to McCarley Baptist Church, P.O. Box 125, McCarley, MS, 38943 or Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Association Scholars.
