Solon Alexander Scott, III, 62, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2025, at Christus Santa Rosa Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, after an 18-year battle with prostate cancer. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, in the Church Parlor at First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Mississippi, with the funeral service immediately following at 11:00 AM in the sanctuary. Dr. Andrew Chaney will officiate. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton, Mississippi, immediately following the service.
Solon was born on April 23, 1962, in Greenwood, Mississippi, and grew up in Itta Bena. He graduated from Pillow Academy and attended Mississippi State University where he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He began his career in Houston, Texas, as a petroleum engineer but decided to return to Greenwood when his father started America’s Catch.
Solon became president of America’s Catch in 1990, bringing his skills, ideas and innovation to the company which helped it grow and prosper. His leadership skills proved valuable to the young business as his loyalty and appreciation of his employees helped create a work environment intent on commitment. As a natural born entrepreneur, Solon had a vision for the company, and its success has been built on the hard work of many valuable people he had the pleasure to work with over the years. Often described as humble and approachable, Solon will be sorely missed by the plant.
His knowledge and innovation made him a catalyst in the catfish processing industry. He advanced the industry as a member of the Catfish Institute Board and the Catfish Farmers of America. In 2008 he was recognized by the Delta Council for Outstanding Contributions to Aquaculture.
Despite his many accolades and business success, his family would be his greatest love. Throughout his treatment years, his family grew closer, as they all learned to depend on each other. As difficult as those years were, they were made easier because he was blessed with a loving wife, and two children that were his pride and joy.
Respected by many, Solon was a man of faith and character and knew many friends. His career and the many years he spent fighting cancer created many special relationships with people he met all over the world. His treatments took him to several continents, giving him years beyond his diagnosis to both further treatment studies, but more importantly, provide additional precious time to spend with his wife and children.
Solon was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as both a Deacon and an Elder. His service on the Witness Committee inspired him to create the Solon Scott Fund to assist in furthering mission efforts of the church that gave glory to God. He knew he had received many blessings from God and wanted to share those with others, usually anonymously.
He was a major benefactor of Pillow Academy and served on their Endowment Board. His philanthropy extended to other organizations in need that he and his family supported. The United Way, American Cancer Society, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Leflore County Humane Society, Boy Scouts of America, Delta Streets, Leflore Christian School, Mississippi State University and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital were among those he felt close to and openly supported.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ashley Lott Scott; his 2 children, Solon Alexander Scott, IV, and Ava Elizabeth Scott; his father, Solon Alexander Scott, Jr., (Teresita) of Greenwood; his mother, Susan Watts Blasingame of Greenwood; father-in-law, Timothy W.
