Obituary

Robert Alexander “Butch” Montgomery, Jr. passed away Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at Claiborne at Adelaide assisted living in Starkville   Funeral services are 1:00 P.M. Thursday, February 9, 2023,  at St. John’s United Methodist Church with interment in Old Wheeling Cemetery near West.  Dr. Scott Wright will officiate.  Visitation is from 12 noon till service time. 

Butch. was born August 30, 1950, in Leland, MS. He grew up in the Delta with a love for the outdoors, hunting, and fishing and enjoyed those things his entire life.

Butch graduated from Greenwood High School, earned his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University, and was a proud member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

Butch was a land surveyor and founded Montgomery Land Surveying over 30 years ago. He surveyed land all over Mississippi and helped young surveyors get started and learn the business.

    Butch was a master craftsman and was meticulous about his work. With the help of his father, he built his own home. He also built beautiful Shaker style tables and furniture. Many of his handmade pieces are now prized possessions among his family.

Butch was an avid scuba diver, spear fisherman, cave diver, and lobsterman. In the 1990s, his love of diving took him to places such as Belize, the Caribbean, and even earned him grand prize with a 14-pound spiny lobster in Panama City, FL.

Butch was a kindhearted man with a love for animals. He was never able to pass a stray dog by without taking it home. Butch raised Border Collies and other herding breeds and competed in herding competitions all over the country.

     Butch lived an adventurous life filled with hobbies and talents, but his greatest talent     was that of grandfather to his two granddaughters, Riley & Sadie.

Butch is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 22 years, Randy Montgomery. He is also survived by his daughter, Quinn Cunningham, son, James (Adair) Cunningham, III, granddaughters, Riley Goldman and Sadie Angell, and grandson, Aaron Goldman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert (Bobby) & Marguerite Fraiser Montgomery, and sister, Evelyn Ann Montgomery.

Pallbearers will be James Cunningham, Jason Clark, Aaron Goldman, Tommy Brown, Jimmy Briscoe, Harry Lott, Joel Whicker and Dr. Andy Johnson  Honorary pallbearers are member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Leflore County Humane Society, 1810 Cypress Avenue, Greenwood, MS 38930.
