Nelson Kong Wong

Nelson Kong Wong, 79, from Greenwood passed away peacefully on the evening of Monday, July 21, 2025, in Arlington, Texas. He was born on October 10, 1945, in Pulau Ubin, Singapore. He immigrated to the United States in 1966 and graduated from Greenwood High School.

Nelson began his career working for his brother-in-law's tailoring business in Singapore then later for his sister and brother-in-law in their grocery store in Greenwood. In 1978, he opened his own business, M&M Grocery, that he operated with his wife for 39 years. While running his grocery store he developed many friendships with customers and was well known for helping others. Nelson enjoyed photography, tending to his plants, watching professional wrestling, taking his daily nap, and drinking his Folgers coffee. Nelson always had a joke to tell but also had a serious work ethic, often opening his store for long hours and on holidays. He was an attendee of Chinese Mission at First Baptist Church Greenwood for many years.

Nelson was preceded in his death by his wife, Susanna Lee Wong; his parents, Wong Weng Mok and Kwan Lian Hai; and his sister, Wong Kum Low. He is survived by his son, Dennis Wong (Jo) of Mansfield, Texas; daughter, Connie Chow (Sam) of Madison, Alabama; Jessica Overbey (Brad) of Plano, Texas; Matthew Wong (Princess Jenkins) of Round Rock, Texas; and four grandchildren, Grace and Abigail Wong of Mansfield, Texas, and Oscar and Gabriel Chow of Madison, Alabama. He is also survived by sister, Karen Woo of Rosemeade, California; sister, Wong Kum Yuet, in Singapore City, Singapore; sister, Ellen Joe of Greenwood, Mississippi; sister, Carolyn Shing, of Clarksdale, Mississippi; brother, Wong Kwong Juay, of Singapore City, Singapore; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Andrew Yee, Steve Miller, Trampas Skelton, Kevin Yee, Terry Toole, and Johnny Joe.

 The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at Arbrook Plaza as well as the Joe Family in Greenwood for their compassionate care and support of Nelson Wong.

 The memorial service is Thursday, July 31, at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Lanny Haley officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery. Visitation is 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. prior to the service.
