Mary Mitchell Joseph, 73 of Carroll County, Mississippi, passed away at her home, Sunday, July 27, 2025.
Mary was born on October 25, 1951, to Archie Ray Mitchell and Jewell Greenlee Mitchell. She was one of five children who leaves behind a legacy of love, having been raised in a large, but close-knit family.
Mary attended Greenwood High School and Mississippi Delta Junior College. She was a dedicated employee of BellSouth, which later became AT&T, for over 32 years. Her career began as a telephone operator, but after being certified in basic electricity, she was promoted to working the network frame, finally ending her lengthy tenure with the company, in the business office. It was during her time at BellSouth that she met her loving and devoted husband, George Charles Joseph, Jr., with whom she shared 36 blissful years in a marriage of unwavering love, commitment and companionship. After retiring from BellSouth, Mary, not being an idle person, returned to the workforce as an admin with the Greenwood Center of Mississippi Delta Community College, until she fully retired in 2020.
One of Mary’s greatest joys was her role as “Granny” to Mackenzie and Mitchell. Well, really she was Granny to everyone! She treasured their time together embracing adventures and making memories, where ordinary outings turned into extraordinary adventures. Many times with Poppa in tow, Granny championed every amusement park, zoo, circus show, sleep over, pep rally, football game, video games, movie night, pool parties, traveling the roads to the beach, the mountains and other exciting destinations! She was a strong woman who always put her family and others first, living a Christian based life rooted in family, generosity and self-less-ness.
Mary is survived by her faithful, loving and dedicated husband, George Charles Joseph, Jr., her only child, who cherished and adored her, Brooke Stewart Reeves (Scott), and her two beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie Lott and Mitchell Lott. She is also survived by three siblings whom she loved dearly, Laura Young (Billy Ray), David Mitchell (Charlotte), Barbara Fields (Terry), nephews, Scott Mitchell, Britt Mitchell, and Clint Young, along with a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephew, as well as extended family and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Billy Ray Mitchell.
Visitation and Services will be held Friday, August 1, 2025, from 11:00 A. M. To 1:00 P.M. at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home in Greenwood, Mississippi, with Chapel Services beginning at 1:00. Services shall be officiated by Pastor Larry Edwards.
A reception for friends and family will be held at Locus Benedictus immediately after Chapel Services to provide a space for everyone to connect, share stories and remember a life well lived.
The family appreciates your thoughts and prayers during this time as we lay Mary to rest in a private burial to be held later in the evening at New Hope Church Cemetery.
The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. F. Henry Flautt, Jr. and staff, as well as the exceptional doctors, nurses and staff at Baptist in Oxford, Mississippi, and Accent and Gentiva Home Health for their dedicated care, comfort and compassion during this challenging time. We are especially grateful for our family and wish to express our gratitude for your prayers, presence, love and support.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Mary’s name to Locus Benedictus, St Jude, or to Shriner’s.
