Martin Youngblood Obituary

Martin Arvell Youngblood, 91, of Phillip, Mississippi passed away February 26, 2024, at Riverview Nursing Home in Greenwood. Graveside services are 1:00 P.M. Monday March 4, at McNutt Cemetery in Schlater with Rev. T. Hill officiating.  Music will be provided by Brandie Spicer, Martin’s granddaughter.

He was born in Tate County to Herman and Bessie Youngblood, attended school and spent his youth and young adult life in different areas of Tate County. He married Doris Perry on a city street in Senatobia on August 26, 1950, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. Martin and Doris settled in Phillip around 1960.  He was involved in several areas of work during his long career including farming, working in cotton gins, working on road and bridge crews, as a commercial fisherman, and as a supervisor at Baldwin Piano Company.  Martin had an entrepreneurial spirit and upon retirement, he raised quail, rabbits, chickens, dogs, and cows.  He was a gentleman farmer who planted truck patch gardens and had a lawn mower service.  He made furniture that continues to stand the test of time.  Someone once described Martin as “the hardest working poor man“ he had ever met.

Martin spent his last years regularly calling his stockbroker and watching the stock market channel.  He looked for reasons to be in a city at mealtimes where he enjoyed hamburger steak, anything chocolate, and ice cream.  He had recently purchased a golf cart and looked forward to listening to music as he rode the roads in Philipp. Martin was a member of Riverside Baptist Church in Money where he enjoyed participating in church activities and serving as a deacon.

Martin is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Doris, daughter, Karen Chapman, great-grandson, Brayden Kelly, and sisters Lorene Little and Faye Long.  He is survived by daughters Barbara Gregg, and Sharon Beckum (Butch); sons, Mike Youngblood (Cathy), James Youngblood, and Paul Youngblood (Sharon).  He leaves behind 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and two great -great- grandsons.

Martin was blessed to have special friends, Jenny Flynn, Pat Bankston, and L. C. McArthur.  Their care, attention, and love for Martin did not go unnoticed and was much appreciated by the family.  The family wishes to thank the staff of Riverview for their care of Martin.  They lavished him with love, compliments, and attention.  He truly thrived under their care.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.

Memorials may be made to Riverside Baptist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
