Martha Davis Obituary

Services for Martha Nell Pinkston Davis of Greenwood will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 4, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood.  Mrs. Davis, 97, died Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at her home in Greenwood.

Mrs. Davis was born in Meridian, Mississippi, September 6, 1927, to John Turner and Mamie Gray Pinkston.  She was the youngest of four children.  She graduated from Meridian High School with highest honors in 1945, received the good citizenship award and was selected by her classmates to deliver the commencement address at graduation.  Her high school years were the World War II years.  She graduated from Mississippi State College for Women in 1949 with a major in English and a minor in art and was a member of Lockhearts and Blacklist social clubs.  It was during her senior year when she met a Mississippi State student, the love of her life, Howard Raymond Davis of Greenwood.  They were married July 16, 1950, and enjoyed 65 years of marriage. 

She had a lifelong interest in English history and art, having painted many pictures for her home and other family members.  She taught four different grades of English in the Inverness, Mississippi, schools during the 1949-1950 school year.  She later taught English at the Presbyterian Day School in Greenwood during the 1970-1971 school year.  She spent most of her adult life as a homemaker also enjoying cooking and sewing.

She was a lifelong Presbyterian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwood where she had been a Sunday school teacher and was active in the Presbyterian Women organization.  She was a life member of the Greenwood Junior Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband and siblings John T. Pinkston, Jr., of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, Marion Pinkston Pigford of Newark, Delaware, and William Lloyd Pinkston, of Miami, Florida.

She is survived by her daughter, Nan Davis Thames and husband Kermit of Laurel, Mississippi, son Howard R. Davis, Jr. of Greenwood, granddaughters Amy Elizabeth Thames of Denver, Colorado, and Anna Thames Biggers and husband Marc of Collierville, Tennessee, and great-grandchildren Marc Allen Biggers and Allie Biggers and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Dr. Andrew Chaney will officiate the services. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Chris Bush, Floyd Melton III, Randy Randall, John Pittman, Earl Pace, Marc Biggers II.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Leflore County Humane Society or a charity of your choice.     Greenwood Delta Funeral Home (www.greenwooddeltafh.com) is in charge of arrangements.
