Martha Barnwell was born on May 9, 1935, in Greenwood, to Allan McCaskill Kimbrough and Ida Lena Hearn Kimbrough. She attended the College of Mary Baldwin in Virginia and the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.
