Karlis Gercens, Jr., 78, passed away suddenly Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at his home on Egypt Plantation near Cruger, MS. Funeral services are 3 P.M. Sunday, October 17 at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with Rev. Al Different officiating. Visitation is from 1-3 P.M. Sunday prior to the service.
Karlis was born in Latvia to Karlis and Marija Martinson Gercens. He and his family moved to Egypt plantation when he was 7. He grew up there and graduated from Delta State University. Since 1978 he has worked as the Farm Manager for Egypt Plantation. He enjoyed the land, loved growing the crops, hunting ducks and fishing. Karlis was also a member of Cruger Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Sallie Clements Gercens.
Mr. Gercens is survived by three sons, Todd Melton (Tina) of Saltillo, MS, Dennis Melton, Jr., (Elizabeth) of Acona, MS and Karlis Gercens, III of Kennett Square, PA; a sister, Milda McMillian of Barrington, IL; a brother, Janis Gercens of Cruger, MS; two grandchildren, Sterling Melton of Gluckstadt, MS and Ryan Melton of Saltillo, MS, 4 Great Grandchildren and the mother of his sons, Linda Gercens of Kennett Square, PA.
