John Stephen Scott
August 10, 1938 – October 23, 2024
John Stephen Scott, known affectionately as “Big Steve,” passed away on October 23, 2024, at the age of 86. He was born on August 10, 1938, in Greenwood, Mississippi, to Solon Alexander Scott and Elizabeth Stephens Scott. Steve grew up in Itta Bena, where he graduated from Itta Bena High School before attending Southern Mississippi University. Afterwards, he returned home to join the family business, Scott Butane Company, working alongside his brother Solon Alexander Scott, Jr. In 1984, Steve sold his share of the business and transitioned to real estate and farming, partnering with his eldest son, Stephen.
Steve shared 54 years of marriage with the love of his life, Emma Sue Scott, until her passing in 2013. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three sons, all of whom survive him.
Steve's eldest son, John Stephen Scott, of Itta Bena, is married to Jan Scott. Stephen is stepfather to three children: John Malouf Jr. of Madison, Chase and Todd Bradford of Biloxi and Justin and Parrish Malouf of Madison. Together, they have six grandchildren: John Malouf III, Doty Malouf, Knox Bradford, Ollie Brandford, Lilly Marie Malouf, and Mary Bett Malouf.
Steve’s second son, Stanley Scott of Milton, Florida, is married to Andrea Lee Scott. They have two children, Andrew and Sherry Scott of Palm Coast, Florida, and Alexandria Lee Glass of Atlanta, Georgia, and one grandchild, Emma Scott.
His youngest son, Stacy Scott, of Mendenhall, is married to Cemper Carpenter Scott. They have two children, Cayla and Michael Kennedy of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Grycen and Bailey Scott of Brandon.
Steve is also survived by his brother, Solon Alexander Scott, Jr and his wife, Teresita of Greenwood.
Steve moved to Greenwood in 1972, and in 1980, he settled on Strawberry Hill, where he lived for the rest of his life. A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, Steve was committed to his faith. He recently achieved 50 years of service as a Master Mason.
Steve loved spending time with his family on his fishing boat, the Delta Cat III, or at his cabin on Choctaw Ridge, where he delighted his grandchildren with recitations and tall tales that blended fact and fiction so seamlessly, you could never tell where one ended and the other began.
Though his family and friends will miss his humor, warmth, and wisdom, they take comfort in knowing that Steve is reunited with his beloved Emma Sue, sharing more stories in heaven. His influence lives on in the lives of his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as the countless people who were fortunate enough to know him.
Services will be at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 29th, 2024. Visitation will begin at 9:30am followed by services at 11:00am led by Dr. Andrew Chaney. Entombment will follow at Odd Fellows Mausoleum in Greenwood, MS. Pallbearers for the service are Grycen Scott, Andrew Scott, Michael Kennedy, Henry Jones, Solon Scott III, Freddy Murphy, Dink Strain, and Chuck Elliot.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
