Jesse Mitchell, Jr. Obituary

Jesse Otha Mitchell Jr., 72, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 3, 11:00 at Odd Fellows cemetery. Sid Woodard will be officiating.

Otha was born to the late Jesse Otha and Norma McClurg Mitchell in Ruleville, MS. Otha moved to Greenwood at an early age and has been a lifelong resident. He owned and operated Mutual Credit and Leflore Credit Bureau and Collection Agency until 1990. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching girls’ softball and instilled the love of the game in many. Otha was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, and his faith was the center of life. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of the American Legion Post #29, and was very faithful in donating blood to MS Blood Services.

Otha, also known as Pappy by his loved ones, had an infectious love for others and enjoyed caring for his Indywood Glen family. The highlight of his day was exercising and visiting with his Advanced Rehab crew. His favorite past times include making daily trips to Walmart and Market Place, stopping by McDonalds for his sweet tea, winning at Bingo, and playing endless games of dominoes with his partner in crime, Tildon. Last but certainly not least, we all know about his love for spray paint.

He was proceeded in death by his sister, Darlynn Kelly. Otha is survived by two daughters, Angela Malouf (Shane) of Greenwood and Jessica Byrd (Jeremy) of Sunflower; a sister, Candy Hony (Michael) of Greenwood; a brother, Lance Dorman of Greenwood; and two granddaughters, Shelby Claire Malouf and Mollie Mitchell Malouf, whom he adored.

The family wishes to offer a special word of thanks to the staff of Indywood Glen and the staff at Advanced Rehab. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post #29 or St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a charity of donor’s choice.
