Janith Sullivan Allen, 81, passed away peacefully February 20, 2023. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 25 at 11:00AM at North Greenwood Baptist Church with interment taking place later that day at Alex Sullivan Cemetery in Mize, MS. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00 prior to the funeral service.
Mrs. Allen, a native of Smith County, a 5th generation Mississippian and the next to last Sullivan raised in Pappy Tom’s original log home in Sullivan’s Hollow, had lived in Greenwood since 1966. She started her career with the Mississippi Employment Agency and later served as the 5 th Circuit Court District’s court reporter for over twenty years. She had a front row seat for countless civil cases and depositions, including documenting testimonies to our nation’s first lawsuit against Big Tobacco, The Tchula 7, and blues legend Robert Johnson. Mrs. Allen was a former member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood and present member of North Greenwood Baptist Church and was a choir member at both. Outside of a court room, she could be found on a softball mound, in a bowling alley, at a Bunco table, or beside her husband of 47 years, Shelton, either tending to their garden or attending an antique auction.
She was predeceased by both parents, Shep and Dovie Sullivan; her husband, Shelton; sisters Sally Sullivan and Geraldine “Boots” Owens. Survivors include her three children; daughters Terri Allen Herendeen of Wheatfield, IN; Karen Allen Perkins (Bob) of Huntsville, AL; son Marty Pierre Allen (Elissa) of Austin, TX; brothers Paul Sullivan of Gulfport and Vernie Sullivan of Gautier; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
