Janis “John” Gercens, 77, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2023, at his home on Egypt Plantation.
John was born in Germany to Karlis and Marija Martinson Gercens, and moved to Egypt Plantation in Cruger at the age of four. He graduated Tchula High School in 1964. He obtained degrees from the University of Mississippi in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. John served in the US Army. He loved all guns and was a great marksman. His favorite pastime was to target shoot on the gun range at Egypt with his friends. John was also very knowledgeable about computers. Everyone around would call John to figure out their computer problems. John worked on Egypt Planation as a farm manager until he retired severalyears ago. John attended Cruger Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Karlis Gercens, Jr. and Valdis Gercens. He is survived by his sister Milda McMillan of Barrington, IL; three nephews, Michael William McMillan of Chicago, IL, William Peter McMillan of Deerpark, IL, Karl Gercens, III of Kennett Square, PA, and his loyal dog, Bella.
