James Pinkston Obituary

Private graveside services for James Warren Pinkston will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 29th, 2019 at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

Mr. Pinkston, 88, died peacefully at Golden Age Nursing Home Thursday, July 25th after a brief illness.

“Jimmy” was born in Greenwood, Mississippi on June 22, 1931 to Jess and Ada Pinkston. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and elected “Mr. Formal.” He served in the Navy and upon discharge moved to New York City and worked as publicity editor for Esquire magazine. He also lived in Hawaii and Los Angeles before returning to Greenwood in 2011. As a lifelong devotee of movies, he managed to combine his vocation as a writer with his passion for Hollywood’s “Golden Age.” He co-authored “Oscar Dearest” and was an editor, researcher, fact checker and writer for authors of celebrity biographies.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn (Billy) Woodell and his brother, Jess Pinkston.

Survivors include his brother Charles (Italia) Pinkston of Palm Coast, Florida; nieces Polly (Johnny) Henson, Peggy (Bob) Gregory, Patty (Ed) Seward, Perry (Pat) Calhoun, Charlotte (Danny) Dale, Mary August (Rhyne) Howard, Holli (Bill) Malouf, Debbie (John) Straiton, Pam (Roger) Kipp, and Angie (John) Malamon; nephews Andy (Karen) Pinkston, Jerry Pinkston and Bill Woodell; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank the yellow wing staff at Golden Age Nursing Home for their special care.
