Mr. George W. Smith, Jr., 91, passed away Saturday evening August 24, 2019 at his home in Greenwood. Graveside services are 11 A.M. Wednesday, August 28 at Odd Fellows Cemetery with Rev. Glenn Seefeld officiating. Visitation is from 9:30 -10:30 Wednesday at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home.
Mr. Smith was born to George W. and Minnie Brister Smith in Leflore County and had been a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Greenwood High school and played for Hinds Jr College football team as the quarterback where they won two state championships. He served his country in the US Navy then worked for many years as bookkeeper for the Buckeye oil mill, and later secretary treasurer for Yazoo Valley Oil Mill. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood and was also a member of the American Legion Post 29 and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law, Audrey Smith.
He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Margaret Clarke “Margie” Smith, three daughters; Charlotte Mitchell (David) of Greenwood, Margaret “Sissy” Burnham (Pete) of Diamondhead, MS, Linda Ahlberg (Ted) of San Antonio, TX, two sons; George Smith III (Janis) of Oakgrove, MS, Clarke Smith of Greenwood, nine grandchildren 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
His Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s research hospital, American Legion Post #29 or the charity of donor’s choice.
American Legion post #29 will provide military honors.
