Gene Mixon

Gene Mixon, 86, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026, at Golden Age Nursing Home.  Funeral services are 10 A.M. Thursday, July 9 at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with George Hester and Rev. Rick  Shepherd officiating. Interment will be in Sparta Cemetery.  Visitation is from  9-10 A.M. prior to the service.

Gene was born in Water Valley to Loren Mixon and Corrine Logan Bryant, graduate from John Rundle High School in Grenada and joined the U.S. Air Force.  After returning home he trained as a pilot and began a career as a crop duster for Murphey Flying Service that lasted for 42 years.  He was a member of Sparta Methodist Church, enjoyed hunting, fishing, and building model airplanes. 

Gene is preceded in death by his wife, June Hester Mixon, his parents, a daughter, Sherry Mixon and a brother Kenneth Mixon.  He is survived by three daughters; Amber Truitt (Norris) of Greenwood, Jackie Wise of Canton, Angie Miller (Allan) of Crystal Springs; a son,   Christian Burrell (Tracey) of Sallis; Granddaughters, Elizabeth Ellis Wise, Gracie Burrell, Audrey Truitt, Whitney Wilson, Peyton Hicks; grandsons, Jake Truitt, Carson Burrell, Joel Love, Eli Watkins; great grandchildren, Luna June Love, Kaiden Burrell,; his sister, Ann Collins (Jimmy) of Grenada and a sister-in-law, Julie Mixon.

Pallbearers will be Jake Truitt, Carson Burrell, Eli Watkins, Joel Love, Jonbob Wise, and Norris Truitt.  Honorary pallbearers are Kealser Meeks, Jimmy Ray Collins, Fred Clark, Randall Makamson, Bruce Pittman, John Moor, Ray Murphey, and Mott Jyles.
