Ellis Paul Antoon, 92, passed away Monday April 10, 2023, at Indywood Glen in Greenwood. Funeral services are 11 A.M. Friday, April 14 at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home with Father Andrew Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post 29. Visitation will be from 10-11 A.M prior to the service.
Ellis was born in Greenwood to Farris and Rose Toubia Antoon. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1948 and attended Mississippi State University. He served in the US Army during the Korean War, spending 15 months in Korea, and attained the rank of First Lieutenant. After the service, he returned to college and graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in Business Administration.
He then moved to St. Petersburg, FL, where he met and married Marilyn Joan Scholl Antoon. He and Jo returned to Greenwood in 1961 to raise their family, and in 1963 Ellis opened Humpty Dumpty, the first convenience store in Greenwood. He sold the business in 2015 and retired, but later took a part-time job with Greenwood Market Place.
He was a dedicated member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He served faithfully in the Knights of Columbus as a Sir Knight Fourth Degree of Msgr John F. Clerico Assembly 1569, and was a lifetime Third Degree member of Msgr John F. Clerico Council 5267. He served the State Council as District Three Deputy and was a former Grand Knight of Council 5267.
He was also a longtime member of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, all his siblings, and his wife of 62 years, Jo Antoon. Survivors include a daughter, Theresa Lang (Kevin) of Panama City Beach, FL; two sons, Tony Antoon (Marsha) of Jackson, MS, Louis Antoon (Carole) of Destin, FL; four grandchildren, Brian Barth of Panama City Beach, FL, Farris Antoon (Laura) of Madison, MS, Rev. Martin Antoon (Elizabeth) of Savannah, GA, Payton Carrington (Nash) of Enterprise, AL; and two great grandchildren, Jack Lanier of Madison, MS and Wade Antoon of Savannah, GA.
Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 29, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, or the charity of donor’s choice.
