Ellen Steed “Gran” Mitchell, 84, passed away Tuesday evening, August 5th, 2025, at her home in Greenwood, MS. Funeral services are at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 9th, at North Greenwood Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Phillips officiating. Visitation is from 9:00-11:00 A.M. in the church parlor prior to the service. It is Ellen’s request that colorful clothing be worn to her visitation and funeral. No somber attire please.
Ellen was born to Herman Ezell and Jewel Reid Steed in Indianola, MS. She graduated from Indianola High School, and then attended Sunflower Junior College earning a degree in X-Ray Tech. She spent her career in the medical profession retiring as an office manager.
Ellen was a faithful member of North Greenwood Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir, was a member of LLL, and a member of the Women’s H.I.S. ministry. She was a member of the Leflore County Republican Women’s Club, a member of the Town and Country Garden Club, a long time sub at Pillow Academy, a dedicated poll worker, and an avid shopper. She cherished time spent with her dear friends in the widow’s group, N.O.W. Weekends often found her singing at the Holcomb Jam or enjoying lively bunco games with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Ray Mitchell, a son, Mitch Mitchell, her parents, and her siblings, Sonny, Jerry, Carl Ray, Randy and Carolyn Steed. She was survived by her son, Scott Mitchell (Rachel) of Seven Pines; a brother, Melvin Steed (Gay) of Corinth; a daughter-in-law, Karen Mitchell of Carrollton; 6 grandchildren, Meagan Rae Little (Matthew) of Franklin, Mary Britton Nobile (Andrew) of Holcomb, Jay Mitchell (Tinsley) of Madison, Colby Mitchell (Amber) of Carrollton, Devin Dowell (Eric) of Greenwood, Edi-Ann Mitchell of Seven Pines; and nine great-grandchildren, Ford, Fisher, & Georgia Little of Franklin, Nettie and Britton Nobile of Holcomb, Elle Mitchell of Madison, Hayes and Jules Dowell of Greenwood, and Creed Mitchell of Carrollton.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Little, Andrew Nobile, Jay Mitchell, Eric Dowell, Colby Mitchell and Conner Walls. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be friends of Scott and Mitch Mitchell, friends who affectionately called their mom “Mom/Gran” as well.
Memorials may be made to the ALS Research Foundation (local or national) or Pillow Academy Athletics.
