Dr. Raymond Peter Girnys, 68, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September19, 2024 at the Greenwood Leflore Hospital. Dr. Girnys was a communicant of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Services will be held Wednesday, September 25, 2024 starting at 11 am with a visitation and mass to follow at noon at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Gregory Plata, OFM, officiating.
Dr. Girnys was born to Peter and Neda (Stankevicius) Girnys in Brooklyn, New York, on February 2, 1956. He grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from Fordham University and received his Doctor of Medicine degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in 1982 in Grenada, West Indies.
He and his wife moved to Greenwood in 2005 and began his work at Greenwood Leflore Hospital. He was a General Surgeon and a Wound Care specialist. His responsibilities included being the current Chief of Staff, Executive Committee, Credentials Committee, Chair of Wound Care, Chair of Infection Control and Chair of Quality Council.
Dr. Girnys is survived by his wife, Barbara Assini Girnys; two sons, Raymond Peter Girnys, II (Kelley) of Newtown, CT; Matthew Edward Girnys of Brooklyn, NY; a brother, Dennis Girnys (Phyllis) of Fort Myers Beach, FL and three grandchildren, Grace Mae Girnys, Oliver James Girnys and Emmett Francis Girnys all of Newtown, CT.
