David Morgan Obituary

David Higdon Morgan died Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at the age of 69 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, James Cunningham Morgan Jr. and Sara Elizabeth (Betty) Simmons Morgan of Greenwood, MS; and his sister, Sara Alice (Sally) Morgan Ratcliff of Canton, MS.

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Theresa McNeer Morgan, of Madison, MS; his son, David Higdon Morgan Jr. (Bailey), of Starkville, MS; and his daughter Anna Morgan Sims (Brady), of Greenwood, MS. He is survived by two grandchildren- Sara Frances Sims and John Thomas Sims, of Greenwood, MS.

He is also survived by his brother, James Cunningham (Buddy) Morgan III (Annette), of Morgan City, MS; and his sister Jean Morgan Bush (Glenn), of Jackson, MS; brother-In-law Charles Ratcliff, of Canton, MS; sister-in-law Etta McNeer Sanderson-Koury (Philip), of Madison, MS; Mary Frances McNeer Thetford (Pat), of Mt. Brook, AL. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

David was a 1975 graduate of Pillow Academy and 1979 graduate of Mississippi State University. He was a devoted member of the Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity, where he met lifelong friends. He was involved in the Bulldog Club at Mississippi State University, the Greenwood Farmer’s Club, Kiwanis Club of Greenwood, and the Canton Elk’s Lodge 458.

David and Theresa were married on July 26, 1986, in Greenwood, MS. They were active members of the community and Westminster Presbyterian Church. A long-time resident of Greenwood, MS, he and his family moved to Madison, MS in 2003 where he established Morgan Sod, a lawn care management company. He was passionate about his work and took pride in the pristine yards he maintained for his clients.

David was a devoted family man who cherished every moment spent as Day Day to not just his own grandkids, but everyone around. His greatest joy came from gathering with family and friends, sharing stories about the Delta back in the day, and creating new memories.

A passionate fan of Mississippi State University athletics, he found particular joy in Bulldog Baseball. Many of his favorite moments were spent at Left Field Lounge, where the crack of the bat, the smell of the grill, and the company of fellow Left Field Lounge Mouths made him feel right at home. Weekends in Starkville were a tradition he cherished.

He had a knack for finding the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants tucked away on backroads, always convinced the next place might be the best one yet. Still, he never passed up a stop at Waffle House.

An outdoorsman at heart, he found peace in the quiet of his own backyard, where he spent countless hours feeding the birds and watching the deer wander.
