Obituary

David Lawrence Hodges, 78, passed away June 21, 2023, at Select Specialty Hospital (Baptist) in Jackson, MS following a brief illness. Funeral services are 3 pm Sunday, June 25, at Morgan City Baptist Church with interment in Bear Creek Cemetery. Rev. Preston Kelly and Rev. Matthew Morgan will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Saturday at Greenwood Delta Funeral Home and Sunday from 1:30-3:00 P.M.. at the church.

David was born in Greenwood to William Abb and Leola Watkins Hodges. He grew up in the Bear Creek community south of Itta Bena, graduated from Leflore Co. High School and briefly attended Moorhead Jr. College. He farmed in his beloved Delta for 57 years. 

David was a man of faith and lived his life according to the Word of God. He loved his family and desired for them to follow the Lord as well. He was a great friend and mentor to many.  He traveled far and wide taking in the sights of this world but was never happier than riding around the farm in his truck. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Bobby Hodges and Virginia Vickers. 

David is survived by two sons, David L. Hodges, Jr. (Melanie) of Itta Bena, Scott Hodges (Shea) of Union; two daughters, Emilie H. Martin (Jarrett) of Tupelo Carrie H. Barefoot (Cliff) of Florence; his longtime companion, Myra Coleman of Itta Bena; the mother of his children, Anita Hodges of Brandon; and nine grandchildren, Katy Hodges, Will Hodges, Ryan Hodges (Lee Catherine), Tyler Hodges, Elizabeth Martin, Grayson Barefoot, Oliver Barefoot, Alex Martin and Victoria Barefoot.

Pallbearers are his grandsons, Will Hodges, Ryan Hodges, Tyler Hodges, Oliver Barefoot and Alex Martin, and his sons-in-law, Cliff Barefoot and Jarrett Martin. Honorary pallbearers are Grayson Barefoot, Ron Henderson, Kenny Mueller, Jason Aldridge, and Chris Vickers.

Memorials may be made to the Morgan City Baptist Church or Bear Creek Cemetery fund both c/o Morgan City Baptist Church 113 2nd Ave., Morgan City, MS  38946
