Carroll Robert “Buddy” Thompson, Jr., 96, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his home in Greenwood. Graveside services are 10 A.M. Monday, September 4 at Evergreen cemetery in North Carrollton with Rev. Michael Payton officiating.
Buddy was born to Carroll Robert and Helen Atkins Thompson on March 4, 1927, in Tampa, FL, he grew up and graduated high school there then moved to Clayton, GA. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He went through boot camp at Keesler Air Force base and was stationed for a short time in Newfoundland. Later he served in the US Air Force reserves. After his service he entered the University of Georgia in Athens where he graduated with a degree in Journalism. He went to work for South Central Bell was transferred to Jackson, MS and then to Greenwood in 1977. He retired after 32 years with the company.
In Buddy’s younger years he enjoyed sailing and salt-water fishing. His later years he enjoyed working in his yard. Buddy was a member of the American Legion Post 29 in Greenwood.
Buddy was a fine Christian gentleman who enjoyed spending time reading the scriptures and praying for the needs of others. He was very devoted to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dorothy Goodman Thompson. He is survived by three sons, Chris Thompson of Jackson, MS, Pat Thompson (Angela) of Slidell, LA, Tim Thompson (Mary Lu) of Schlater, MS; eight grandchildren, Mary Clair Thompson, Ellen Sandel (David), Nathan Thompson (Kayla), William Thompson, Anna Rochelle Thompson, Laura McDonald Thomas (Kevin), Ian Patrick Thompson, Clara Diane Thompson; and four great grandchildren, Collin Thomas, Darby Thomas, Arthur Thomas and Ava Nell Thomas.
Pallbearers will be William Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Ian Thompson, Robbie Grant, Kevin Thomas, and Johnny Ballas.
Memorials may be made to the Greenwood Humane Society, St. Jude Children’s research hospital, American Legion Post 29 or charity of donor’s choice.
