Billy Clanton Cook, Sr., 80 passed away Thursday evening, September 12, 2024, at his home in Carroll County surrounded by his family. Funeral services 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 16 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Glenn Seefeld officiating. Visitation is from 12:30 till 2:00 at the church prior to services.
Billy was born in Tillatoba, MS to Clyde Roy and Mary Elizabeth Cockrell Cook. He grew up in Tillatoba and graduated from Oakland High School. He went on to attend Northwest Junior College and then Delta State University where he received his master’s degree in education and administration.
Billy began his teaching career in Leflore County at East Elementary. He taught and coached for 34 years. He coached football, basketball, and track. He also taught many students gymnastics, how to jump double dutch rope and ride unicycles. Students could be seen riding unicycles in the Greenwood, Carrollton, and Winona Christmas parades. He loved supporting his grandchildren in all their sporting events.
He was a longtime faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Greenwood where he was a former Sunday school teacher.
Billy was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Clyde, Milers, J. C., Jimmy, Brad and a sister Martha Ann. He is survived by his wife of 59 years , Janis McRaney Cook; 2 daughters Christy Bond (Lee) of Greenwood, Deanna Lowery (Barry) of Winona; 2 sons, Bill Cook (Newby) of Greenwood, Brad Cook (Fran) of North Carrollton; a brother, Bobby Cook (Sheridan) of Fairmount, GA; grandchildren, Reed Cook (Callie) of Nashville, TN, Mary Shelton Bond of Greenwood, Raines Cook (Maegan) of Madison, Elizabeth Claire Nichols (Gunner) of Winona, Emilee Catherine Welch (Jakob) of Stewart, Ann Warner Bond (Pacey) of Winona, Emma Baylee Cook of North Carrollton, Eliza Bradley Cook of North Carrollton, MS; great-grandchildren, Finley Nichols of Madison, Braxton James Welch of Stewart, MS, Hayes Cook of Madison and Vivian Cook of Madison, and a special friend and sidekick of many years Walter Moore.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Greenwood or the charity of donor’s choice.
The family wishes to offer a special thank you to caregivers Sherry Martin, Ami Burchfield and the staff at Accent Care, and to all his former coworkers and students.
