Betty Taylor Obituary

Irene Elizabeth “Betty” Taylor, 85, a long-time resident of Carroll County, died Friday the 21st of June at her home with her loving family.

Born December 23, 1933 in Kosciusko, Mississippi to Carl C. and Anna Elizabeth (Thomas) Robbins. She grew up there and graduated from Kosciusko High School in 1952. She continued her education by attending Millsaps College, from which she received her B.A. in English in1955.

She was married to Tommy Barbee Taylor on June 18, 1955. Two sons were born to their marriage, John Carl Taylor and Thomas Glenn Taylor. Betty and Tommy were married for 55 years when Tommy passed away on January 3, 2011.

During her working life, she taught school, was a legal secretary, served as the first social worker in Humphreys County Welfare Department for 13 years, and was a mental health consultant for Region Six for eight years until her retirement in 1990.

Betty loved socializing, attending her beloved Malmaison Baptist Church, going to sporting events for grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and watching Mississippi State athletics. She had a smile and personality that could light up any room.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carl C. Robbins; mother, Anna Elizabeth (Thomas), Carl Thomas Robbins; and husband, Tommy Barbee Taylor.

She is survived by her two sons; John Carl Taylor (Joanne) and Thomas Glenn Taylor (Verna Kay); one foster daughter; Sue Moler Hawkins (Ben); seven grandchildren; Norwood Taylor(Kimberly), Mary Clare Taylor, Landon Taylor, Ryan Taylor (Maggie), Justin Taylor, Miranda Bonds (Hunter), and Madison Hawkins; and four great-grandchildren; Carson Jenkins, Kenslee Taylor, Cannon Taylor, and Sadler Taylor.

At the time of her death she was an active member of Malmaison Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and assistant pianist. In her retirement she enjoyed being a member of the following: Mississippi Delta Community College Alumni Association Board, Carroll County Development Association, Cherokee Rose

Garden Club, and Carroll County Farm Bureau Women’s Chair.

Services have been entrusted with Greenwood Delta Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 24th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the funeral beginning at 2:00 p.m. Following the funeral service, there will be a brief graveside service at Malmaison Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Malmaison Baptist Church of the American Cancer Society.
